Wat Phnum Cleanup
AngkorOne.com’s First Social Outreach Event

June 18, 2009, 6:00 - 9:00 AM

Angkor One is deeply committed to social outreach, and considers AngkorOne.com and its community to be a powerful vehicle for improving the lives of those most in need and the environment that we all live in. On June 18, 2009 we sponsored our first social outreach event – picking up litter around Wat Phnum. More than 300 volunteers, including 14 monks, woke up in the early morning and joined this momentous event.

In recognition of their commitment, each will receive 25 AngkorOne Credits and an AngkorOne.com t-shirt. With these Credits, they can use them on AngkorOne.com to attend a free training or have a chance to bid on a night out with their favorite celebrity. If you want to join one of our next social outreach events and earn some AngkorOne Credits, check out our events and register online.

Education

In Cambodia, the adult illiteracy rate is one of the highest in the world at 26.4%. One of the main factors driving this low number is lack of access to education materials. This is precisely why AngkorOne.com is proud to mobilize textbooks and computers from the United States for distribution here in Cambodia. Currently, agencies and caring individuals in Minnesota, Illinois and California are committed to this education program.

All items will be shipped directly to our Angkor One office whereby a committee will objectively determine how to best distribute them. In the near future, we hope to open our first AngkorOne library and computer lab for everyone to use at no charge. We are also mobilizing volunteers to teach English in rural areas.

Health

Diarrhea is a leading killer in developing countries and 74% of all deaths in Cambodia comes from water borne diseases. These alarming statistics is why Cambodia faces one of the lowest life expectancies in the world at just 58 years old. There are many poor Cambodian families who are forced to drink disease-filled water for their own immediate survival. For $14, you can provide a Cambodian family an easy to use water filtration system that does not require any electricity.

The manufacturer RDIC has implemented numerous clean water projects in rural villages of Cambodia. Their ceramic water filter has been used in Cambodia since 2003. By late 2007, they have distributed nearly 60,000 filters. These filters provide affordable high quality drinking water for communities that don’t have access to safe drinking water. Their filters have proven to be immensely effective in reducing the exposure of users to contaminated water.

Safety

For our Safety program, we are fully committed to providing helmets to those who cannot afford them. Our mission here is to simply save as many lives as possible. According to Cambodia's Road Traffic Accident and Victim Information System, more than 75% of accident victims are motorbike riders and most fatalities are attributed to children not wearing helmets. In recognition of this life-threatening trend, in January of 2009, Cambodia started to enforce helmet use for all motorbike riders. The average Cambodian makes 50 cents a day and at a cost of $12 for a helmet, most of them cannot afford it.

Orphans

According to UNICEF, the total number of orphans throughout Cambodia is about 670,000 or 5% of the total population. Our mission is to build an orphanage by the end of 2010 called AngkorOne Dreams. We are committed to providing a facility for orphans to sleep and eat, but we will also provide workshops for them to gain marketable skills such as sowing, cooking, using a computer and learning English. We aspire to see all orphans are given an opportunity to pursue their own dream and become independent.

Share

This approach embraces the above branding image (one of four: Khmers. Unite. Inspire. Share). The adult is showing a child how to fish with the sunlight shining into the water giving them hope. There’s a Chinese proverb: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life."
